Chapter 6

“Who would do such a thing?” Lacy asked as she stepped forward to hug Amy.

“I guess Vivica wasn’t as far off base about the tampering as I suspected she was,” Georgia admitted.

“We’ll have to forfeit this round,” Amy said. “There’s no time to prepare more meat.”

“Does your entry have to be slow-cooked ribs?” Lacy asked.

“No,” Amy said. “The meat just has to come from the grill or smoker. We have two hours until the judging. There’s not a lot you can make in two hours.”

“Steak,” I offered. “Or burgers.”

“Lobster,” Georgia said. “I have a great recipe for grilled lobster tails that don’t take long to prepare. We’ll need supplies.”

“We can help,” I offered. “I can run by the fish market, and Lacy can head to the grocery store for whatever else you need.”

“I’ll call the fish market and talk to Clara. We’ll need large lobster tails,” Georgia said. She looked at Lacy. “I’ll make you a list for the grocery store.”

“Shelby and I will discard the charred meat and clean the grill,” Amy offered.

“Okay. Let’s go to work,” Georgia said. “My grilled lobster tails might not win this event, but it will keep us from having to forfeit.”

I’d had Georgia’s grilled lobster tails in the past, and it was really delicious. First, you cleaned the lobster and placed the split shell on the grill with the meat on the top exposed. Once the lobster tails were almost fully cooked, the lobsters’ meat was brushed with a garlic herb butter sauce and allowed to cook a little longer. Basting the lobster tails as they finished cooking allowed the buttery flavor of the sauce to work its way into the meat. I supposed it was likely that something that had been grilling or smoking for hours and hours would win the event, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Georgia’s lobster tails didn’t at least place.

“I just can’t believe that someone would intentionally ruin Amy’s ribs,” Clara said as she handed me the package of lobster tails she’d picked out for Georgia.

“There have been rumors of tampering since the beginning, but until now, I wasn’t sure the rumors were true. There is no way Amy would accidentally leave the temperature on her grill so high. The only explanation is that someone came by and turned it up while everyone was inside for the morning competition.”

“Were there other entries which were likewise ruined?”

I frowned. “I’m not sure. We sprang into action once we realized what had happened with Amy’s ribs. Once I get back, I’ll suggest that an announcement is made to warn other entrants to keep an eye on their grills and smokers.”

By the time I returned with the lobster tails, Amy and Shelby had cleaned the grill, so Georgia went to work preparing the lobster tails for grilling. Amy preheated the grill to the exact temperature Georgia had requested. I asked Georgia and Amy what they thought about making an announcement, and Georgia said one had already been made. Amy’s ribs were the only entry to have been tampered with.
