Chapter 6
âWho would do such a thing?â Lacy asked as she stepped forward to hug Amy.
âI guess Vivica wasnât as far off base about the tampering as I suspected she was,â Georgia admitted.
âWeâll have to forfeit this round,â Amy said. âThereâs no time to prepare more meat.â
âDoes your entry have to be slow-cooked ribs?â Lacy asked.
âNo,â Amy said. âThe meat just has to come from the grill or smoker. We have two hours until the judging. Thereâs not a lot you can make in two hours.â
âSteak,â I offered. âOr burgers.â
âLobster,â Georgia said. âI have a great recipe for grilled lobster tails that donât take long to prepare. Weâll need supplies.â
âWe can help,â I offered. âI can run by the fish market, and Lacy can head to the grocery store for whatever else you need.â
âIâll call the fish market and talk to Clara. Weâll need large lobster tails,â Georgia said. She looked at Lacy. âIâll make you a list for the grocery store.â
âShelby and I will discard the charred meat and clean the grill,â Amy offered.
âOkay. Letâs go to work,â Georgia said. âMy grilled lobster tails might not win this event, but it will keep us from having to forfeit.â
Iâd had Georgiaâs grilled lobster tails in the past, and it was really delicious. First, you cleaned the lobster and placed the split shell on the grill with the meat on the top exposed. Once the lobster tails were almost fully cooked, the lobstersâ meat was brushed with a garlic herb butter sauce and allowed to cook a little longer. Basting the lobster tails as they finished cooking allowed the buttery flavor of the sauce to work its way into the meat. I supposed it was likely that something that had been grilling or smoking for hours and hours would win the event, but I wouldnât be surprised if Georgiaâs lobster tails didnât at least place.
âI just canât believe that someone would intentionally ruin Amyâs ribs,â Clara said as she handed me the package of lobster tails sheâd picked out for Georgia.
âThere have been rumors of tampering since the beginning, but until now, I wasnât sure the rumors were true. There is no way Amy would accidentally leave the temperature on her grill so high. The only explanation is that someone came by and turned it up while everyone was inside for the morning competition.â
âWere there other entries which were likewise ruined?â
I frowned. âIâm not sure. We sprang into action once we realized what had happened with Amyâs ribs. Once I get back, Iâll suggest that an announcement is made to warn other entrants to keep an eye on their grills and smokers.â
By the time I returned with the lobster tails, Amy and Shelby had cleaned the grill, so Georgia went to work preparing the lobster tails for grilling. Amy preheated the grill to the exact temperature Georgia had requested. I asked Georgia and Amy what they thought about making an announcement, and Georgia said one had already been made. Amyâs ribs were the only entry to have been tampered with.
